Protect What Matters: A 4.5 year old ToughSkin!
January 24, 2012
Speck caught up with Todd Erickson at CES this year to find out how his ToughSkin has kept his original iPhone in mint condition. That's right, he's got a 4.5 year old iPhone with a 4.5 year old Speck case on it!! Check out the video or quotes below to see what Todd had to say about the long-lasting protection of his ToughSkin case.
“I have had the case since 2007, which is a halcyon time, so more than 4 and a half years ago. Look at how polished it has gotten on the back, because when I got it, it was somewhat semi-matte. Every time I have been talking nervously to a girl, I rub my thumb on the back of the case in my pocket. But yeah, this thing has got as many miles on it as any case you guys have made or sold.
This little nick on the phone right here was me getting a call and trying to be funny guy, while rock climbing. I clipped off and the phone dropped (phone in case). It hit on the way down and all it did was this little knock on the corner of the case. Look at the phone, it’s mint! I was up a good 15 feet. It tumbled a little bit but the phone is great! You know 5 years going with this phone and it looks like I can return it like it’s new. It’s absolutely outstanding. People kind of make fun of it because it’s a dinosaur at this point, but it looks a lot better than any of their phones.
I was visiting “brand – x’s” booth, and it’s not like you can go more than 10 feet without running into a iPhone case manufacturer, and a lot of them are super hard. Any force is going to get transmitted directly into the phone, and this case is soft and rubbery. I understand that a harder case would have taken enough, but I don’t care if the case gets damaged, I just don’t want my phone to get damaged. This is soft enough that it’s going to transfer the force out before it actually has a change to damage the device, and it’s still fine!
It’s great, and I really appreciate it because I wouldn’t be able to still be rockin a 5 year old phone on my original contract, which is about half of what all of my friends are paying, if this phone had gotten hammered the last few years. All in all, the 25 bucks I paid for this case has saved me 35 bucks a month on my phone bill.
So hey, thanks for the great case!”
